How to Make Business Cards in Canva

You do not need a designer or expensive software to make Canva business cards that look professionally printed. Canva ships with hundreds of ready-made card templates, a built-in QR code tool, and a print-export option that handles bleed and crop marks for you. This walkthrough takes you from a blank template to a print-ready file — and covers the details, like bleed and colour mode, that separate a card that prints cleanly from one that comes back with white slivers along the edges.

Step 1: Start from a business card template

Open Canva and search "business card" in the template bar, or start a custom design at 3.5 by 2 inches, the standard North American size. Working from a template is the fastest route because the layout, spacing, and type hierarchy are already balanced.

  1. Search Business Card and browse the template grid.
  2. Filter by style or colour to find something close to your brand.
  3. Click a template to load it — most come as a two-page design with a front and back.

Step 2: Customize the content

Swap the placeholder text for your real details and make the design yours. Keep it lean — a card that tries to say everything ends up hard to read.

  1. Replace the name, title, phone, email, and website with your own.
  2. Set your brand colours by clicking any element and entering your hex codes (or apply them in one step if you have a Brand Kit).
  3. Choose one or two fonts at most and keep sizes readable — nothing below about 7 pt for print.
  4. Leave a little breathing room; do not crowd text against the edges.

Step 3: Add your logo and a QR code

Upload your logo through the Uploads panel and place it where it anchors the card, usually a corner or centred on the back. Then add a QR code — one of the most useful things you can put on a modern card.

  1. Open Apps in the left sidebar and choose the QR Code tool.
  2. Paste the address you want it to open — your website, your Google Business Profile, or your reviews page work well.
  3. Generate the code, drag it onto the card, and size it to at least 2 cm square so cameras read it easily.

A QR code turns a paper card into a doorway to your online presence. Point it at your reviews or booking page and a handshake becomes a lead. If you would rather build the code separately or need to track it, our free QR code generator makes one you can drop straight into the design.

Bleed matters: printers trim stacks of cards slightly imperfectly. If your background colour stops exactly at the edge, that wobble shows as thin white lines. Extending the background past the trim — the "bleed" — hides it. Canva adds bleed for you when you turn it on at export.

Step 4: Export a print-ready file

When the design is final, export it the way a printer expects rather than as a screen image.

  1. Click Share, then Download.
  2. Choose PDF Print as the file type.
  3. Tick Crop marks and bleed so the printer sees where to trim.
  4. Download and open the PDF to check both sides look right before sending it off.

One caveat on colour: Canva exports in RGB, the colour model for screens, while most commercial presses print in CMYK. Colours can shift slightly on paper as a result — bright blues and greens are the usual culprits. If exact colour matters, ask your printer whether they need a CMYK file, or use Canva Print, which converts colour for you.

Step 5: Order your prints

You have two good paths. Canva Print lets you order finished cards shipped to your door, with paper and finish options, straight from the design. Or download the PDF and take it to a local Toronto print shop, which often wins on price, stock choice, and same-day turnaround. Either way, always approve a physical or digital proof and scan the QR code on it before committing to a full run.

A note for business owners

A card is a first impression, but it is also a redirect — its whole job is to send someone from the real world to your online front door. That is exactly why the QR code and website line matter so much. The catch is that most people who want your service will look you up on Google long before they ever hold your card, so the page the card points to needs to be one that already ranks and converts. Handing out cards while your business is invisible in local search is doing the hard half and skipping the easy wins. If you want the found-you-on-Google half handled properly, our local SEO service is built to get Toronto businesses showing up in the Map Pack and organic results.

Frequently asked questions

What size are business cards in Canva?

Canva's standard business card template is 3.5 by 2 inches (about 89 by 51 mm), the standard North American size. When you add bleed, the working area extends slightly past those edges so background colour runs to the trim line. If your printer needs a different size, start a custom-size design at their exact specification before you begin laying out the card.

Can I add a QR code to a Canva business card?

Yes. Canva has a built-in QR code generator under the Apps menu — paste in the web address you want the code to point to and drop the generated code onto the card. Keep it at least 2 cm square so phone cameras can read it reliably, and always scan the printed proof before ordering a full run to confirm it resolves to the right page.

How do I export a Canva business card for printing?

Use Share, then Download, and choose PDF Print. Tick Crop marks and bleed so the printer knows where to trim. Canva exports in RGB, so if your printer specifically requires CMYK, either convert the PDF in another program or use Canva Print, which handles the colour conversion for you. Send the printer the front and back as separate pages or a combined file per their instructions.

Can I order printed business cards directly from Canva?

Yes. Canva Print lets you order your finished design as physical cards shipped to you, with options for finish and quantity, and it manages print colour for you. It is convenient, but comparing a local Toronto print shop on price, paper stock, and turnaround is worth doing, especially if you need cards quickly or want a specialty finish.
